Lipduuuub

So, on Saturday I was apart of the filming and volunteering of UVic's (BC's, not the one in Spain) very own Lipdub! It was a looooong day (up at 6:15, starting at 6:45, ending at 5:30), but HOLY WAS IT FUN. This shot here was the final scene (it was done in 4 cuts), which was actually filmed first. Essentially, everyone is dancing in sync on the quad while they filmed from the roof of the library. It was so sick. Also, despite the fact that it was suppose to be rainy, it was hot and sunny ALL DAY. The song we did is Michael Buble's Haven't Met You Yet.

..didja click it? SUPRISE! That's the first (and probably only time) I've ever attempted to rick-roll anyone (yes, you lucky anonymous reader you). However, I have a point to it. See, the lipdub was rick-rolled to. See what I did there? Yeah, I'm clever. Anyways, here's the actual video for the main song... (but first, you should actually watch the Rick Astley music video. It is hilarious and awesome all at once.)

So, Mr. Buble let UVic use this song for the lipdub for like, $50. How cool is that? Pretty cool. The official launch of the video is going to be near the end of next week, and for the first 30 days it will be raising money for charity. Yay for good willed students!

Quatchi

Quatchiiii! I love this little guy.
Anyways, for this picture, I tried out a technique that I heard out literally like half an hour before I shot this. Its called the Orton Effect. Essentially, if you're shooting in RAW, you take a photo in focus, and then one out of focus, and then overlay them in the camera (or on photoshop I guess). Pretty much, this was done pretty quick, but I'm pretty pleased with it, because I actually more or less achieved the "dream-like" effect that I was going for on my first attempt.

Annnd here's a sweet song for the road:
We Didn't Start The Fire, by King Charles

Kate Moss, 50 Cent, Obama is the president
PC scares, no one dares, lipitone, coke
climate change, live aid, katemine, new wave, loose malls, hearts are hollow,
indie on the radio

down with self esteem, another beauty magazine,
Bridgeport, suicide, Facebook to face thighs,
hedge funds, boys with guns, manic state mania,
immigration stole the nation, Mother Russia, Alphonsa

We didn't start the fire
It was always burning
Since the world's been turning
We didn't start the fire
No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it

Buton has a breeding camp, but Garbee? stamps his people out,
the gallows take Saddam Hussein, the closing of Guantanamo Bay,
Tracy M. ???, Have we found a new disease?
David Beckham, Posh Beckham, earthquake, and vanity,
the Rolling Stones still play, we all know Tom Cruise is gay,
lime light celebrities, the season lost integrity,
Ian Huntley, Harold Shipman, Madeline is still missing, 20 virgins up in heaven,
what's the cause of 9/11?

We didn't start the fire

sensitive Islamist, satire struggles to exist,
cartoons, teddy bears could start a holy war,
X factor, Glastonbury, Laura Marling, ecstasy, Prince Charles and Camilla,
the media is a bloodsucker,

Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, they owned Koreas before the crown,
I'm still loyal to the Queen, and she's still loyal to you and me
Credit Crunch, cash for honors, northern rock, John Prescott,
labor government union embarrassed us all

We didn't start the fire

advancing on the Israelites, terrorist for animal rights,
ununited generation, love is just a hippie notion,
Queen Mother laid to rest, absurd Diana inquests,
the grace of the Prince has stand it's test,
existentialist whine?, Muhammad fiat
Bombs over Baghdad, troops to Afghanistan, war on terror, friendly fire,
what's the truth and what's a lie?

Man has made himself a slave to oil, porn, gold and fame
But as the dollar weakens even further
Britain will be great forever

We didn't start the fire

-SWEET lyrics.

Not doing work... oops.

Soo I should probably be doing some work right now.... but no. Because I love procrastination. Instead, the internet says, "Nah, you have lots of time. You don't reeeally need to do that do you? Didn't think so. Do it later." And I'm all like "Oh you, I know that's not true. But okay." So here I am. Speaking of (looking at?) bikes, EVERYBODY BIKES HERE. Walking to class, I can count usually at least half a dozen people every minutes or so. At least.

..But for real, I should do some work now. So I'm going to watch Cougartown instead, and then I'll for real do some work. Take this song for the road:

Love The Way You Lie Mash-Up, by Sam Tsui

This guy does some pretty interesting covers/mash ups, and has quite the impressive voice, although admittedly a bit of an annoying singing face. Also, this video is kind of awesome. Anyways, hope you enjoy!

Hoooly

You might be asking, 'what are these odd pictures for?' Well, I will tell you. These show, in fact, a (probably not entirely correct) finger spelling of the letters "o-m-g." You see, just yesterday was my very first ASL (American Sign Language) class. Not only was it entirely overwhelming and scary and intimidating, it was also kind of... awesome. Sure, it intimidates me from the top of my brain all the way down to my little toes, but it was definitely one of the most interesting hours in a classroom I've ever spent. The instructor himself is deaf, and there were translators there... for the first half. Then, they left, 'cutting the apron strings,' 'saying adios,' and 'walking into the sunset.' The rest of the class, and the rest of course, was completely silent. Only signing allowed. Now, as you can imagine, this is quite overwhelming and a little difficult. But, surprisingly, with a patient prof who went nice and slow (and was actually quite funny), it was much easier than I expected. Sure, this class is going to be hard, but I am genuinely excited to continue taking it. So for now, I leave you with this: think about the gestures you make everyday, and just consider how much they affect the thoughts and ideas you convey. Pretty cool, right?

Edit: that's not actually how you do a G properly. And the M should be more relaxed. Oops! To find out more, look on wikipedia!

All growed up

So, right now is nearing towards the endish of my fifth day living all on my own. That's right, I'm all grown up and off to college (well.. university). It's different than anything I've ever done/experienced before, but I'm liking it okay. I'm in a single room, which suits me, and is a decent size (check out the photo below of the undecorated room!). Anyways so I thought I should just post something because it's been a while, so here's a song and a photo. (PS the internet connection is shit here, which makes uploading this photo a much longer process than necessary). Soon, I'll hopefully get out around campus and take a few sweet photos, since this campus is actually quite pretty, especially in September.

And this is the song that I was recently shown, and I seem to subconsciously sing it a little too much...
Fuck You, by Cee Lo Green

So this song is really, really catchy....
