That Weird Part of YouTube

There are certain phrases in this world that make me smile. For example, whenever someone says "be still my beating heart," it inexplicably makes me smile, and usually suppress a giggle. Every. Time. I don't know if it's the fact that I momentarily picture them as a love-struck cartoon while saying this, or the fact that it seems so out of place in today's world, but I always get a kick out of people saying it. There's another phrase though, that pleases me even more:

Oh yes, you know what I mean. It pops up most commonly as the most-liked comment on certain videos, and it makes me laugh every time. It's funnier than "that weird part of the Internet" because, well, most of the internet is weird. Usually boring weird. But to be weird on YouTube is an entirely different thing. There is perhaps no feeling more universal than that of being caught in what my brother and I refer to as "the YouTube vortex." One minute, you're watching a video of a girl covering "Rolling In The Deep." Next thing you know, minutes have turned into hours, Charlie is biting his brother's finger while auto-tuned, you've watched that damn Christian the lion video three times, you've seen things you didn't even know were physically possible and bam- you're in that weird part of YouTube. Again. Thought Catalog describes it nicely in this article:
"True, you start off looking at clips which make you feel good, i.e. “cute kittens,” “fat people falling,” “girlfriend pranks,” but two and a half hours later you’re looking at an 11-year-old kid with a gravely undiagnosed personality disorder from Germany looking into the webcam at you for 6:52 minutes with 37 views from 2006, and you looking at him in a k-hole’d haze, your respective gazes forever six years apart, trying to find something in each other, the retina and video cam merging into the same point of isolation, but nothing."
I think it can be best surmised with this:
So, what do you think about that weird part of YouTube? Where's the weirdest place the "related videos" bar has taken you? Post a link in the comment section, and be rewarded with high fives.

My Drunk Kitchen

Have you ever seen My Drunk Kitchen on YouTube? If not, you probably want to check it out.  Hannah Hart (aka MyHarto) posted the first episode of MDK almost one year ago, on March 16th 2011. Since then, she's made almost 20 more episodes. Each episode is about 5 minutes long, consisting of the host getting progressively more drunk while cooking food. While this shouldn't work as a regular YouTube series, it does. She fills each video with hilarious quips, food-related puns and metaphors, and general hilarity. I try to avoid watching them in public, as most episodes I end up laughing out loud embarrassingly to myself. Check out her Canada-inspired episode below:

My Drunk Kitchen, Ep. 10: Poutine

Also, she raps.

Walk Off The Earth

YouTube is a really great thing. It shares things across the world, creates communities, and provides endless hours of entertainment. It's also a great place to discover new music. Recently a group called Walk Off The Earth did a cover of Goyte's song "Somebody That I Used To Know." It went viral, and it's not hard to see why. After seeing this video, I checked out some of their other songs. They do both covers and original songs, and they're awesome. As of today, the "Somebody That I Used To Know" video has 34.5 million views. It was posted less than 3 weeks ago. Check it out:

Some of my other favorite's by these guys are a kick-ass version of Adele's "Someone Like You," and Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory."

5 YouTube Videos

Okay.. so this whole "Christmas song a day" thing didn't quite pan out. But I've been busy, and I have an exam coming up, so I'm going to let that slide, and maybe start it up again after exams are done (and it's closer to Christmas). But just because I haven't posted anything in a while, here are 5 YouTube videos that I've found in the last week or so that are especially awesome:
Community's Freaks and Geeks
This is Childish Gambino's song "Freaks and Geeks" set absolutely perfectly clips of Community, the TV show that he stars in. It's really really well done. Don't just listen to the song, watch the video too.

Childish Gambino- Heartbeat (Violin Cover)
This is just straight up awesome. I am a sucker for when people do stuff like this with rap/hip-hop/etc songs. And this guy is really talented.

15,000 Singing "Say You Like Me"
This is footage that Charles Trippy from the YouTube channel CTFxC filmed onstage during a concert of his band We The Kings. It gets good at around 1:10. Seriously, this video almost gave me chills, and puts a smile on my face every time I watch it. Check it out.

Rod Stewart Gasoline Alley
Courtesy of my sister at thefemiwriter.tumblr.com, this is Rob Stewart singing Gasoline Alley. Just listen. It's nice.

Forever Yours
I'm subscribed to charlieissocoollike and nerimon on YouTube. I like them. And this is a cute video.

So there you go! For those of you who still have exams, good luck! Now I have to get back to studying... :(

Mini Warbler

Before I tell exactly how I experienced the atrocity that was the Canucks 8-1 loss to Boston, I thought you could use some cute videos. You know, to help you forget the embarrassment of last night. So here they are; the cutest video I have ever seem, and then the most random editing job as well.

SO CUTE. CANNOT EVEN HANDLE IT. And then there's this...

I don't even know what to say? I like it?

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On

I'm baaaaack. Contrary to popular opinion (or at least I like to pretend), I have not disappeared off the face of the Earth, or been kidnapped by pirates. No, I am just lazy, and that is the only excuse for my lack of posting. Hopefully, this adorably odd YouTube video will make up for it:

"And I'm like, compared to what?!"

Doesn't that make you feel better? There is no way you didn't laugh a little, or at least smile.

Anyways, I'll post something better soon.

...Maybe.

...My life is pretty full of nothing right now.

Buy you a drank

Yeah, I pretty much love any acoustic cover of any song. This one is especially good. I feel like I may have already blogged about it, but I can't really be bothered to check. So here goes:

Thank. You. YouTube.

...Also I'm watching part of Red Dragon right now and it is creepy and Ralph Fiennes is most definitely evil. Or at least awesome at pretending to be.

Freshman's Wharf

STUDY BREAKKKKKK

Alright, so recently I went to a small short-film fest/screening thing at UVic, and they showed the first two episodes of a web series called Freshman's Wharf that some UVic students made last year. It was pretty amusing, and I went home and watched the rest of the episodes pretty quick. Each episode is only a few minutes, so next time you have have spare half hour or so, I suggest that you pop a squat and give them a look. (Did I just say "pop a squat"? THIS IS WHY I SHOULDN'T BLOG WHEN TIRED) You can see them all on YouTube:
>>Part 1
>>Part 2
>>Part 3
>>Part 4
>>Part 5
>>Part 6
>>Part 7
>>Part 8
>>Part 9
>>Part 10

I don't know too much about the whole situation about the creation of it, except that it was done for a summer course (I think), and the script was selected as a winner in an open contest. It's happening again this year, if you are interested. Anyone is eligible to enter a script. At least that's what they said at the film fest. These rules say differently. So I'm kind of confused. Best idea, just let other people do the hard work, and wait to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

A-HA. Google proves once again to be helpful than I ever could be. Read more here.

(Sorry if this post makes little sense. I'M TIRED.)

Study-break

So I realized that, when deciding to post a video a day, I had failed to fully think this plan out. I definitely only know about 3 amusing videos at anytime, and I was pretty sure that I was going to have to resort to youtubing "funny baby" or "cute cat" very very soon. BUT fortunately, people post all sorts of great videos on facebook, so as long as I do my casual lurking, I can find all kinds of cool things.

So here it is, your study-break for today. My friend posted this on my wall yesterday. It WILL make you smile, even just a little, because who knew that something so simple could be so goddamn awesome and cheerful.

HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO DO THAT NOW?

Happy Holidays

Jonah & Padre performing
Christmas cracker toy and the tree
Greetings all!

Hopefully everyone survived the holiday madness, successfully burned a good sized hole in their wallets during Boxing Week shopping, and gained at least a good 4 to 5 pounds while stuffing yourself with delicious holiday food.
Personally, my house is full to the bursting with all types of food, both gifts and home-made. Delicious, yet so so bad. And by bad, I mean delicious.

Also, my family managed to attain the entire 1st season of Glee, the first part of the 2nd season of Modern Family, a DVD of a U2 concert, and several other TV shows on DVD. So yes, this means I have been sitting in my comfy recliner, eating chocolate, and generally being a big huge lazy blob.

Ah, gotta love the holidays.
Cutecutecutecutecute little boy!

But seriously, I hope that your holiday season has been good so far, and yes... I still have nothing of particular interest to tell you people. Yesterday my family had a huge family (and friends) dinner with 18 people, including one adorable little 4 year old. He got a playhouse for Christmas, and put on a lovely little puppet show for us all. Man, kids are cool sometimes. Also, note that, as seen in this picture, he is the best dressed 4 year old I have ever met. Seriously, last night he was wearing an vest, matching tie, blazer, and a sweet little hat to match.

Anyways, having successfully taken up a good chunk of your valuable loafing time (PS does anyone else know what else I mean by 'loafing'? Or is that just a phrase my cousin made up?), I shall reward you with a song, which I have no affiliation with, nor can I take even a smidgen of credit for. However, I like it, so here goes...

Old Man by Neil Young
Oh! For sticking with me here, I have a treat for you (kinda? maybe?). If you're like me, youtube is great for finding and listening to new music. This site here (bang) is awesome because it makes it super easy to get songs off of youtube onto your ipod/computer/mp3 player (hey, some people still live in the early 2000's I suppose). Enjoy!
