Death Valley

Yesterday, my friend showed me the MTV show "Death Valley." We watched the first two episodes, and I'm not going to lie, I liked it. It was pretty funny, and has a certain unique-quirkiness to it. While I doubted that any show on MTV could be either clever or original, this show is both, kind of a mockumentary-Zombieland hybrid that's pretty funny, although I'll give you the heads up that it is a little graphic. The trailer makes it look a lot more serious/dramatic than it really is, but check it out anyways, and read more about it here:

Astronautalis

I just found out about this rapper, Astronautalis, thanks to a post on Twitter. This song, "Contrails," features Tegan Quin (from Tegan and Sara), and the video was filmed in Vancouver. I really like both the song and the video. What's more is, when I was checking out a few of his other songs on YouTube, all the comments were overwhelmingly supportive, which is a rare thing to see on YouTube, and I thought that was pretty cool. If you like rap at all, I suggest you check it out:

Also check out "Dimitri Mendeleev" by the same guy.

Rifflandia!

As promised, here is my blog post about Rifflandia. I'm staying at the school after classes, because my internet is still down at my house (I feel like a real student, taking advantage of free wi-fi and everything!) I'm going to do the same kind of template as I did for my Folk Fest blog post, but probably a lot shorter. So here goes:
The Players

Name: Chelsea Brown
Age: 19
Rifflandia Experience: First-timer
Special Skills/Knowledge: Chelsea can remember almost every song she has ever heard. This makes her a handy asset in that she knows the name of most of the songs that the bands she knows play (cough cough City and Colour).

Name: Zoe Smith (me!)
Age: 19
Rifflandia Experience: First-timer
Special Skills/Knowledge: Intensely read up on all things Rifflandia before attending. Schedule? She knows it. Wristband connect? She knows where. What buses to take? She's got it. Pre-fest meal? OH BOY does she have a plan.

(not pictured)
Name: Jessica and Laura
Age: 19
Rifflandia Experience: Again, first timers.
Special Skills/Knowledge: Unfortunately, we lost them after the first set. They had a good time though.

The Venue
The cool thing about Rifflandia is that it is split up into day and night venues. I only bought a day ticket, so we stuck to Royal Athletic Park from 1 until 9, where there were two stages set up, the main one and a smaller side stage. I liked this venue because it was accessible, spaced out (but not too much so), and the stages weren't competing with each other. The sets were actually lined up really well, so they were never overlapping/playing over each other. This also meant that, if you chose to, you could see all of the acts playing that day. There was also a sweet food vendors area, featuring all Victoria-based food companies, which was nice to see. There was also "Artlandia," a small area featuring art from- yup, you guessed it- local artists. The night venues are split up all over the city, playing in different bars, clubs, and theaters. I definitely want to check it out next year, because I think it's a cool concept (although less convenient than having them all in the same area). Vaguely related to venue is Rifflandia's "Wristband Connect" and "Winlandia." Basically, simply having a Rifflandia entrance wristband can get you deals, free stuff, and entries into various contests all over downtown Victoria. Unfortunately, we didn't take advantage of this, but it's definitely an awesome idea, and something I would want to take into consideration next time.

The Music
We stuck to the main stage all day, and saw 5 sets. I really enjoyed myself- there wasn't an act that I didn't enjoy. Also, all the acts were on schedule, which was awesome. So, briefly, here's the run down:

Vince Vaccaro: A Victoria native (I think), I only knew a few of his songs, but I liked his style. The Peak plays "Catch a Fire" and "Costa Rica" a lot, but did you know he also does an awesome cover of Arcade Fire's "Wake Up?" Yeah. It's good. Anyways, Vaccaro was the first set we saw. It was good- his music was a perfect way to ease into the music-fest mind-set. Overall, I like his music to begin with, and was excited to see him live. He didn't disappoint; he also played a bunch of new music, including a song called "Emergency," which I really like. Also, instead of CD's, he sold download cards... that you can plant once you're done with them and they grow into flowers because it had seeds embedded in it. Yeah. Cool.
Jets Overhead: I didn't really know any of these guys songs before Saturday, but Chelsea knew their music and really liked them. She was right- they were good, and I enjoyed their style. While their stage presence was a little boring, their music was still enjoyable. Also, they played some of their new stuff, which is always nice to hear from a band.

AWOLNATION: I'd only heard of AWOLNATION about a week before Rifflandia, and didn't even realize I was seeing them until a few days beforehand. I like them though; it's fast music that's fun to dance/singalong to. "Sail" is a particularly catchy one. This was a nice break in between some calmer, more "mature" music.
Cold War Kids: Literally the only thing I knew about these guys were that they did the song "Audience of One." While it was cool to have one song I recognized, I actually really really liked these guys. They were probably my second favorite of the day. It's always nice to hear a band that you don't really know and end up really liking them. Also, they had some of the best stage performance we saw.
City and Colour/Dallas Green: This man is amazing. Seriously. I've liked City and Colour for a few years now, but I only really listened to his old stuff. Not anymore. I have 3 new albums in my iTunes, just waiting for me to listen to. For real, this guy was amazing live, and probably the only reason I didn't sink into a deep depression about not seeing Bon Iver in Vancouver on Sunday night. He had the best stage presence of the crowd, and the audience loved him. Chelsea and I waited about 45 minutes between Cold War Kids and City and Colour just so we could get a good spot. It worked- we were right at the front, and it was awesome. By the end of his set, people were crying, singing along, and calling for more. He casually sipped his way through a few bottles of beer throughout, and played mostly newer stuff, but the songs I recognized (and loved) that he played included "Sleeping Sickness," and "The Girl." He also played a fucking amazing version of "Body In A Box." Seriously, it was goosebump worthy material. For one song, he politely asked everyone to refrain from filming/recording/taking any pictures. While it was tempting, it was a really cool thing to do, and the whole atmosphere changed with it. Hands down, he was the highlight of the day.

Crowd Surfers: There were a lot of them. I'm about the worst person ever when it comes to carrying crowdsurfers, but they're always fun to watch.

That's all! I had a great time, although I little sad I didn't go for the Superpass (oh wait- I'm a student, and it's pricey. But still...). There were a lot of other awesome acts playing, like Mother Mother, De La Soul, and The Knocks (who I wanted to see so bad). Rifflandia is a really cool music fest- read more about it here.

Rifflandia (teaser)

In case you thought something looked different, you were right- I'm trying out this new look for my blog, because I got bored of the other one. I think this one looks a bit cleaner. What do you think?

More importantly though, I went to Rifflandia this weekend. I only made if out for the Saturday day, but I had a wicked time. We saw Vince Vacarro, Jets Overhead, AWOLNATION, Cold War Kids, and City and Color. Although I only really knew of Vince Vacarro and City and Color, I was really impressed by all the sets. I took a few pictures, but I'm just between classes now, so I'll write up a longer post, pictures included, later. (When? I don't know. My internet at home is being very shady lately). For now though, I'll leave you with my new favorite City and Color song and one of my favorite pictures from the day (even if it's not my best).

Beware: serious cuteness ahead.

Today was the first day of really bad/depressing weather in a long long time. Fortunately, I found this video today. My new goal is to watch this at least once a day. And then I will never be sad ever again.

Seriously. Have you ever seen anything this cute before? I know I haven't.

The Secret to Working Out

I'll be the first to admit it: I'm not a fan of exercising for fun.

I mean, I don't hate it. I won't go out of my way to avoid it, and I've done sports all my life. I even enjoy walking/hiking/kayaking/paddle boarding. You know, easy exercise. The kind that you don't really realize you're doing because you're enjoying it (it probably doesn't hurt that I do this kind of stuff in North Van, which is arguably one of the prettiest outdoor recreation B.C has to offer). My friends are always asking me "Wanna go for a run?" or "Wanna hit the gym this afternoon?" To this I reply, usually with a laugh, "Nope." (subtext: I have more important things to do- like eating, and blogging to the internet. Legit excuses... right?)
A shockingly accurate depiction of my hair.

Go The F*ck To Sleep

I'm sure a lot of people have heard of this "children's" book parodying night-time stories, but did you know that Samuel L. Jackson does narrates the audio version?? It's hilarious. LISTEN NOW.

Two words: FUCKING SLEEP.

My favorite part is the last few lines.

Age

So right now I'm writing an "informal letter of application introducing myself" (not important), and it just struck me how much I hate the phrase "I'm ___ years young." Like, good for you for being positive or whatever, but come on. I mean, that doesn't even really make logical sense. And, more often than not, it makes you sound like a douche.

How To Have One Perfectly Perfect Moment.

Step One: brew one cup of this tea, with a scoop of brown sugar and milk.

Step Two: play this song (I Can't Make You Love Me/Nick Of Time cover by Bon Iver)

This is about the prettiest song ever, and I love love love it. I don't think I could ever get tired of it.

Step Three: get comfortable.

Enjoy!

Cadboro @ Night Part 2

Cadboro Bay is, I've decided, one of my favorite places in Victoria. Last year, I often walked down there, day or night, to take pictures, take a walk, or just enjoy the view. Tonight, being the full moon, I once again made the trek down there (oh how I miss living on res at times like this) and took some long exposure pictures (Yes, I have done this before). The results are quite different from last time, but I managed to get a few cool ones (I think). It was super bright and totally clear out. From here on out, the weather is only going to get worse. Thank you for your time Septummer!

Anyways, back on topic, here they are, with minimal editing... how I spent my Monday night instead of studying:

That Can Be My Next Tweet

So, in the exciting news of my life today, I found this site called That Can Be My Next Tweet. As far as I can tell, it gets random bits of all your previous tweets, and spits out an endless supply of tweets that it thinks you might, in some far-off alternate dimension, be likely to tweet. Or, you know... tweet in a drunken haze one night. Mostly, it succeeds at producing hilarious, semi-coherent tweets that could put even the drunkest tweeter to shame. So, without further adieu, here it is... My Top 10 15 Possible Tweets (with possible explanations).

1. 2011 ... sometimes I have a double high-five?
Because sometimes, all you need to do is ask life politely.

2. The scary tragedy- Norway gunman kills 80 at an alarming rate.... can enjoy this... I get involved?
And in this alternate twitter dimension, not only do I take pleasure in public shootings, but I want... to join it? Um....

3. Shark Week: River Monsters- NO WHERE IS SAFE. I CAN SMELL IT. Chairman Meow is pregnant.
My keen sense of smell might keep me safe from the fresh water sharks, but nothing will protect me from the spawn of Chairman Meow*.

4 a. !
Because apparently I am enthusiastic about life.
   b. ?
But also confused.

5. PADDLEBOARDINGPADDLEBOARDINGPADDLEBOARDING YAY RIP Jack Layton.
In the midst of my excitement over paddleboarding, I'm suddenly overcome with the news/reality that Jack Layton has died. And immediately feel the need to pay my respects.

6. Just Announced: Jay-Z and his passion, ability to fight Cystic Fibrosis. Good job UVIC! I have a pic.
I would so very much like to see this picture. Good job supporting the good cause though, Jay-Z.

7. When my best cure is that YOUR STALKING LEVELS ARE NOW UP 200% Congratulations.
My best cure for  what? My intense lack of creepy friends? But good job... I guess.

8. Right now there are few things freakier in politics in has 100 problems.
This one almost makes sense. In a dramatic, politics-so-twisted-it-scary-but-my-English-no-good-to-express-it kind of way.

9. THESE BEYONCE BABY JOKES ARE TOO EASY. And I KNOW HOW MUCH YOU MISS PHYSICS 12 flying high five.
They are easy! But I don't remember this Physics 12 flying high five. It sounds awesome.

10. I jumped out of strictly sandwiches. EXCELLENT PRACTICE FOR MYSELF NEXT YEAR.
What are strictly sandwiches? And why the hell must I practice jumping out of them? Is this that new sport coming to the 2012 Olympics?

11. One week left in life than giant fish. Seriously, wtf!
Wtf indeed. Perhaps I've solved the mystery of the afterlife? It sounds scary.

12. Flying high five. Playlists get involved? From afar, it really scared me.
Because when playlists start high-fiving, you know shit's gotten real.

13. Still get a good day, and hilarious. Beyonce is pregnant. Now Jay-Z and bitch ain't one.
Au contraire, I think this is solid evidence that they will be one? You know, in the form of the child sharing both of their genes? To be fair, I wouldn't have called Beyonce a bitch.

14. PADDLEBOARDINGPADDLEBOARDINGPADDLEBOARDING YAY RIP Rick Rypien, sad to me so far Today my dresser drawers!
Again, my paddleboarding joy is cut short by a celebrity death. However, I get distracted by my bedroom furniture.

15. JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE!
Because sometimes, you just like repeating your friend's names. In cap locks.

Anyways, I suggest (if you have twitter) you give this site a try. Hell, even if you don't have twitter, find a friend/celebrity who has it and use their username (although this will likely be less funny). It is hilarious, and make you appreciate drunk-you's ability to at least make sense online most of the time. If you fit the criteria of both having twitter and reading this blog (cough cough Chelsea and Hilary), you should share you best ones via the comment section. Go on... make me laugh!

*Chairman Meow is the name bestowed upon a neighborhood cat who is known for his incredible stalking/lurking abilities. Not only is he a boy (and therefore should NOT be pregnant), but I'm fairly certain he watches my family while we sleep. And likely takes notes. Unless you have experienced it, it is hard to imagine the utterly weird lurking habits of this cat. This is him, savoring his last moments of stalking me before I move:
Whatever you do, do NOT make eye contact.

Things I Like

I can be quite a negative person on this blog. I complain/whine/list off things that could be better. In reality though, I'm generally an optimistic, positive person. SO, to bring some nice things to internetland, here is is....

THINGS I LIKE (note: this list is non-exhaustive, subject to change, and completely subjective.)

1) Music wise, at the moment, I'm particularly into the songs Boston, Super Bass, Candy Candy, and anything by Bon Iver. This isn't to say I don't like any other music (because I like almost any other type of music), these just happen to be the ones I've been listening to a lot lately. Also, I Love You This Big. But that's mostly because I have a secret soft spot for country music and, as you can see if you watch the video, I'm fascinated in HOW SUCH A DEEP VOICE CAN COME FROM SOMEONE WHO LOOKS ABOUT SIXTEEN. (I checked: he's 17. He was most definitely born in 1993. As in, the year after me. Whaaat?)

2) Celebrity wise, there are 4 boys who will always have my love: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Matthew Grey Gubler, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (seriously, I first saw him in Angels in the Outfield which used to be about my favorite movie ever). I won't bore you with why, but I'm just saying... these guys are my favorite. Also, due to her recent movies (uhhh Zombieland/Easy A/Crazy Stupid Love to name a few) Emma Stone is my new favorite actress. Like, I'd probably see any movie if she were in the trailer, even just for a second.

3) Small fluffy things. Don't lie. No one goes around saying "Fuck, I hate PUPPIES." No matter what, small fluffy animals will make you smile.
I miss UVic bunnies...
Recently I was at Jericho beach with my family for a family dinner. There are a lot of dogs at Jericho. A lot. Anyways, my sister and I befriended a Boston Terrier. I always thought they were kind of weird, but now I realize that they kind of look like Stitch (from Lilo & Stitch) and, as my sister pointed out, "they just look like they would be really chill if they were a person." So yeah... there's that too.

4) Right now, I'm liking Victoria. It's nice here. And I actually enjoy being back on campus. Also, today I sat in my backyard, in the sun, reading my textbook while little birds flew around the bird feeder in the tree beside me. How can I complain about that?

5) Live music. This summer, I saw Dan Mangan, Said The Whale, and many more (at the Vancouver Folk Fest and Live At Squamish) live. There are few things more enjoyable than good live music. My goal this year is to see more live music. Now that I'm 19, this is slightly easier, and I'm off to a good September start; Hey Ocean is playing at UVic next week, and today I got my Rifflandia ticket for the end of September!

6) Small things. For example, I really really liked canned peaches. Like, a lot. I could probably eat them everyday. This is a pretty small thing in the grand scheme of things, but it's good to remember what small things can make you day a tiny bit better.

Anyways, this has been a fairly general list, but I'm tired now so I'll end it here. Just remember; sometimes it's good to make a list of things you like, or things that make you smile, or people you like seeing. Think about it!

We Need To Talk About Kevin

Recently, I came upon the trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation of the Lionel Shriver's novel "We Need To Talk About Kevin." It caught my attention for several reasons. First of all, I was surprised to see a movie had been made at all; I hadn't heard anything about it until the trailer was released. I just finished reading this book a few months ago, and although it took me a while to get into it, it was one of the most memorable (albeit disturbing) books I've ever read. It was a well-written book, yes. I could hardly put it down by the end, yes. And yes, it creeped the hell out of me. I guess I don't do too much reading to begin with, but I think this is the only piece of fiction (with the possible exception of a short story in my English course last term) that left me feeling legitimately unsettled. Here's the trailer:

Notice the quote "Stunning... a brilliant adaptation of my novel" -Lionel Shriver. A little weird to have in the trailer, no?

While I did enjoy the book, I'm not sure if I will see the movie, for a few reasons. Firstly, the book alone left me feeling mildly disturbed; I don't know if I want to see it on a big screen. Secondly, I don't feel like this is a movie that can be done justice through a movie adaptation. The main character of Kevin is described in such a vivid, disturbing way in the book that I think presenting him as one specific, tangible person (he's played by Ezra Miller) will take away much of the unimaginable, mysterious coldness that makes him so scary and unrelatable in the book. By this, I mean that there is a very high chance that Kevin's personality will be very hard to portray accurately on screen. While this is the case for many movie adaptation, Kevin's unusual personality is what essentially drives the whole story along. (although that line at 1:27... wow, creepy). As well, while I think Tilda Swinton will do a good job as Kevin's mother (although she's not how I imagined her), it irks me that John C. Reilly was cast as Franklin, her estranged husband and Kevin's father. If I were to see this movie, every scene with him, no matter how serious, all I will see is this. And this. I guess to me, he's just too similar to Will Ferrell in my mind. And I do not like Will Ferrell. Whether I'll see the movie or not, this movie adaptation fascinates me. If anyone I know sees it, I'll be interested to know what they think. (Also, if you haven't read this book yet, I recommend it. It is an intense read.)

Any thoughts about the trailer/movie/book? Lemme know below!

cool videos

Here's a few video's I thought I'd share. They're pretty neat. It's a series of 3 one minute videos made by some guys during their travels. It's pretty cool stuff.

Summery September

I donated blood for the first time yesterday. That's good karma, right?

Whether it is or not, someone's done something right around here, because the weather has been great since the day I got here. Not only is it sunny everyday, but it's hot. Like, August hot. Sure, this means that all the classrooms are stuffy as hell, walking between classes works up a sweat, and the buses essentially turn into sweat boxes, but I'm not complaining. I guess this is the weatherman's way of making up for our shitty July, and I'm not complaining. Last September was kind of average, followed by 8 months of kinda-cold-kinda-windy-but-mostly-lots-of-cloudy-days. So this is really my first time seeing UVic's campus in nice weather. I love it. UVic is actually quite pretty, especially in the summery weather. Walking by the quad, there are students all over it; sitting under the trees, lying in the sun, studying, and playing frisbee. Some people even set up a slackline between a few of the trees.

I guess there's not much point of this post, I'm just spreading the love for this summery September. This good weather is putting me in a really good mood. Also, I finally got my Rifflandia ticket today! I am beyond stoked. I'm only going for the Saturday day, but I'm still going to catch Vince Vaccaro, City and Colour, Jets Overhead, and lots of other bands. HOORAY!

One more thing- The Vancouver Sun is giving out free music downloads from now until the 15th. COOL!
Not my picture, but still pretty.

I'm back!

Be forewarned:  This is going to be a long post. Full of stuff about me and my life and pictures of my life. Think of it as a virtual recap of my life this last month. EXCITING, RIGHT?

After a busy last month of August, I'm back to Victoria, back to school, and unemployed. The logical next step, of course, would be to blog about it. My mind's still a bit all over the place right now, and I'm finding it a little hard to actually sit down and write something. But for those of you who are interested, this is what I've been up to this past month or so:
